Growing as big as 12 inches, its leaves can be as long as 9 inches and 5 inches wide. As Karen Randall explains in her article about Anubias Barteri (available here), this plant develops quite large root and because of its large size, it is recommended to plant it in a large tank. It can be planted in the middle or the background of the tank. As all Anubias Barteri, this plant should be either planted directly in the bottom sand/gravel of the tank or attached to a piece of root or rock with fishing line. After a while, the roots will attach themselves on the chosen substrate and the fishing line could be removed. This second technique is often recommended as this plant is quite difficult to plant in a sandy substrate. Indeed, the rhizome should always stand out of the gravel as it as the tendency to rot when buried.
As other varieties of Anubias Barteri, Anubias Barteri var. caladiifolia is found in the occidental part of Africa (Nigeria, Cameroon, and Guinea). Karen Randall also likes to remind us that this plant can take different shapes and colors. Anubias Barteri var. caladiifolia is also very undemanding regarding water conditions. Very adaptive, this plant will suit most aquarium conditions going from soft to hard, or alkaline to acidic waters. Temperature is not an issue either as this plant is doing good in the range of 68 to 86F. Some have reported that this plant is a little more sensitive to water quality than Anubias Barteri var. nana.
As its other Anubias Barteri cousins, caladiifolia’s growth is quite slow. Its leaves are more rounded and larger than the nana’s one, but they are as sensitive to algae as the latest. Some hobbyists have reported that soft and slightly acidic water should help get rid of the unwanted algae. Leaves can live several years and only a few new one grow every year. Lowering the CO2 amount dissolved in the tank water can also control algae development.
This plant can be reproduced by dividing its rhizome.
Anubias Barteri var. Caladiifolia is a beautiful plant, strong enough to resist most aggressions (including some coldwater fish). This plant can be of the best effect if planted in group in the middle to back portion of the tank.
